UKCC won by 17 runs. When two friendly teams with big hitters meet for an encounter, the obvious winner is a nail biting finish. And yes, it was yet again a clincher. With exams and qualifiers week in the picture, UKCC traveled to VOA park with 11 batsmen devoid of its two all rounders specializing in the bowling part of the game. Cinci won the toss and unexpectedly put UKCC into batting.
The ever fiery Akshay opened the innings with Rohan playing the supporting role. In the third over, an unfortunate inside edge ruled out as a LBW sent Rohan waiting for another game to portray his batting skills. Hari joined in with Akshay and with confidence gained from the previous two games, he timed the ball well and good. After picking a big six over midwicket and a straight drive four over the stumps, he was playing good with singles and twos. Akshay on the other hand showcased some beautiful pulls that were unfortunately stopped in the dense field for only twos and threes. A miscued shot by Hari (19) and a chase of a wide ball by Akshay (27) provided some hope to the Cinci team. Stavan was playing his usual role of picking gaps and taking singles. Russel had to depart early to a reflex action catch at covers. With four wickets down (64/4, 8 overs), captain Prasanna decided to stabilize the innings along with Stavan. Overs 8-13, both of them were scoring 8 runs per over with only 1s and 2s. Prasanna's wide heap over long off turned futile with the catch been taken inches from the boundary (16). Abhijit Joshi took Prasanna's role and Stavan also started accelerating his innings. Overs 14-17, they scored boundaries consecutively (12 runs per over), when finally Stavan got out for 31 runs. Abhijit got out in the 19th over for 24 (2 sixes, and 1 four). The rest of the innings was wrapped up by the rest of the batsmen. Final score was 155/9 in 20 overs.
Thiag and Manju opened the innings for Cinci. Dangerous Thiag played his part in waiting for his zone balls and picked them for sixes and boundaries, while sensible Manju played straight and picked 1s and 2s at regular intervals. With Cinci's runrate going par to UKCCs runrate after 7 overs, UKCC felt the pressure of not having its regular middle order bowlers. Rohan's natural left arm action produced a peach of a swinging yorker that uprooted Manju's middle stump. A consecutive nipping ball took the off stump of Vishnu thereby providing the first glimpses of a recovery. Stavans golden hand yet again produced a Midas touch in making Prabhu give a catch to deep midwicket Russel's throat. A fourth ball six by Thiag was avenged rightfully by piling the stumps in the consecutive delivery. A Jhonty stretch by Harsha at short midwicket produced a run out in the very next over. UKCC believed that the silver lining in the clouds just turned into a sunspot. But, they were proved wrong by the thunderous clouds - Raof and Ashok. Both attacked the ball after watching the bowler carefully. With each hitting two sixes in consecutive overs, the required equation turned into less than run a ball. Over 14 is when UKCC got a break when Ramanas full length ball was guided into the hands of a diving point fielder Sai. With a plausible finish by good bowling in sight, acting captain Akshay was brought into attack.
Equation - 20 required of 5 overs with 4 wickets in hand
Ball 1 - Slow and short, miscued pull by Roaf to deep square leg, caught by Abhijit
Ball 2 - Length ball outside off, guided to third man for two runs.
Ball 3 - Length ball outside off hits standing up keeper Hari on his thumb, glides off his right shoulder towards short square leg. Both Hari, and square leg fielder Abhijit run towards the ball. Abhijit collects the ball and throws to the bowler who was yelling along with the rest of the team for a run out. OUT by a mile!!!!
Ball 4 - Length ball pitching on off, nipping and passing through the gates of the batsmans defense to uproot leg stump.
Ball 5 - Length ball angled from off to middle-middle off, straightening the other way (leg cutter) and knocking the off stump. The sounds of victory echoed through the entire VOA park as Akshays brilliance wrapped up Kalvinsoft Cinci's innings.
With this win, UKCC has qualified as the first team with 6 points to the knockout stage. UKCC plays their arch rivals (on field) KCC this Sunday at 10 am.
